Each day is a circus
The spectacle confuses truth
The lion tamers and tightrope walkers dazzle the mind
And the sideshow freaks divert my attention
Deep inside,
I know the performers are beautiful souls
But within the tent all we see
Are mutes, mimes, jugglers, and clowns,
Who search desperately for symbols
With which to express emotions too great for words
I stand transfixed by their enchanting displays of pointless actions
But their words have no meaning
An unintelligible garble of syllables
Only their movements
The feinting touch
The change in facial muscles
The look in the eye
Can unroll the muddled scrolls
To reveal the hieroglyphics of these unfathomed souls
At night there is hunger
I walk my demons on the darkest streets
No drink or dance can quench this silent thirst
With sweat soaked limbs
Breath thick and bitter
When the desires of the flesh are innihilated with combustion
When no lust lies unfulfilled
Even when the body lies smoldering beneath the sheets
Still my soul moves out in search of that unnamed
It reaches out in all directions
Saturating the space between the atoms
Filling the gaps
At one with the ether
Once you asked, 'What is it about me?'
I tried to answer that which words cannot express
My words were an insult to God and heaven
My words played havoc with the subtle order of chaos
My words were a stain on gifts never opened
Those of us who love words most
Who are vain and blind with the powers of expression
Only we truly know the futility of the verbal symbols
For only we would dare to attempt
That which for all time has been forbidden
And dare to speak of
And dare beg to share
Those gifts which no words can name
I accept the limitations of the human condition
But still,
At night there is hunger
